Water companies ‘must introduce hosepipe bans’

“We’re in a serious situation now, where both the environment and our water supplies are at risk,” she said. “Water companies shouldn’t just hope for rain – they must act now in case the weather stays dry. “If water companies delay introducing hosepipe bans now, extreme steps to manage water supplies over summer may be needed, such as standpipes and rota cuts. ” Hosepipe and sprinkler bans are already in place in parts of Sussex and Kent. Since October the region has received about 11in (28cm) of rain, compared to the long- term average of 15in (38cm). Groundwater levels are the lowest on record in some areas, while two reservoirs – in Weir Wood, West Sussex, and Bewl, Kent, are less than half their normal depth. The Environment Agency said it had not ruled out applying for drought orders on behalf of water companies if they do not do enough to protect supplies.
Taoyuan’s water back on

At around 10pm on Wednesday, water supplies to 150,000 households in Luchu Township (?¦? and Taoyuan City were suspended after unacceptable levels of turbidity appeared in the water coming from Shihmen Reservoir (¥??w), a major water source for northern Taiwan. The problem was caused by an ongoing project to flush sediment accumulated at the dam gates. Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Hou Ho-shong («J©M¶¯) held an emergency meeting at 2am yesterday to discuss solutions with the agency and the Taiwan Water Supply Corporation (TWSC).
