Mahr said a plan in the early stages to connect the Coachella Valley to the State Water Project, which brings Northern California water to Southern California, might be considered a regional project, he said. The state Department of Water Resources operates the State Water Project, and the U. Bureau of Reclamation runs the Central Valley Project. Both are major sources of water for Southern California. Under this week’s order by the State Water Resources Control Board, the board could choose to restrict water deliveries to Southern California if the state and federal agencies fail to reduce salinity by mid-2009.

Shortage of Water Twice as Costly as Flooding: Research
CRI – Feb 18, 2006
5 times more than the losses incurred by floods. It also warns that the lack of adequate water supply will be a major impediment to the country’s social and economic development over the next 30 years. Expert analysis of the research shows that disputes over water supply, water pollution and uneven distribution of water resources challenge the government’s goal of building a harmonious society. Gao Zhong, a senior consultant on water resources, said that China’s current public administration of the water supply is part of the problem. Responsibility for water is shared by the Ministry of Water Conservation, urban planning institutes, public affairs management departments and the environmental protection department. “Such an administrative structure weakens the government’s power of management in water distribution, pollution prevention and water conservation,” said Gao. The research experts have also examined the root causes of major water conflicts and made suggestions on reforming water administration.

Turn back to your taps – we all pay the price for bottled water
Times Online – Feb 18, 2006
Despite its pure image, bottled water is making a significant contribution to climate change. The industry produces as much greenhouse gas as the electricity consumption of about 20,000 homes in a year, according to research by The Times. To supply the more than two billion litres of bottled water that is consumed by Britons every year, a quarter of which comes from abroad, bottled-water companies produce 33,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions, just less than the electricity consumption of 20,000 households, and the equivalent of the energy needs of 6,000 households. The principal environmental cost comes from transport — about a fifth of bottles come from southeast France, about 600 miles (1,000km) away — but there are also costs involved in the manufacture and disposal of bottles. Evian transports its water about 930km from Lake Geneva, producing about 14,000 tonnes of CO2 in the process. Volvic, whose water comes from Auvergne, produces about 9,000 tonnes. British suppliers, with smaller distances to travel, are less environmentally costly… Evian exports about 50 per cent of its water to more than 120 countries. Volvic exports about 60 per cent. The report accused some producers of disrupting the water supply of local communities. The water-extraction facilities for Coca-Cola’s Dasani line in India, for example, had caused water shortages in more than 50 villages, it said. Bob Geldof, who has worked on water conservation issues in Africa, said: “It is the great irony of the 21st century that the most basic things in the supermarket, such as water and bread, cost the most. Getting water from the other side of the Earth to sell here is ridiculous. ” Last year the bottled-water market was worth £1.

8 days, contaminated water flowing in
Ahmedabad Newsline – Feb 18, 2006
Citing several reasons responsible for contamination, Deputy City Engineer Jainik A Shah says: ”Old city has a very old water connection line. These have not been changed for ages. It happens that the connecting line of water supply gets damaged on its own and water gets contaminated. ”
Blaming the old city area residents, he adds: ”Even they are sometimes responsible for the problem. They have never cared to check their private water connecting line and change the faulty line. ”
But how can one think of living without this essential commodity? In the event of emergency-like situation, residents of this area are relying on bottled water and erratic tank-water supply. In the last three days, the situation has only deteriorated… Jamalpur is not the only area that has complained of contamination. Residents of Raikhad, Behrampura and Dani Limda in the Walled City have also lodged similar complaints. The dirty water supply has created civic chaos. Says Ghulam Sheikh, a miffed resident of Behrampur, ”We have been receiving dirty water for the last 10 days and even lodged complaints to the local authority. No one has cared to check the problem till date. ”
Local authorities, on the other hand, claim they received information on water pollution from the localities only on Thursday. ”People from Haladiwar and Jamurinipole area approached us this evening with complaints regarding contaminated water,” said Jamalpur ward-in-charge.
